Origin of the Poem
This poem is titled 《不第后赋菊》 (“Ode to the Chrysanthemum After Failing the Imperial Exams”), written by Huang Chao (黄巢, c. 835–884), a Tang Dynasty rebel leader and poet. It was composed after he repeatedly failed the imperial civil service examinations, an event that fueled his resentment toward the corrupt Tang regime. Later, the poem became a rallying cry for his historic peasant uprising (874–884 CE), which briefly toppled the dynasty.
